Ecology Survey Cheshire: Surveys and Assessments

What is an Ecology Survey?

Ecology surveys are undertaken on proposed development sites to establish any environmental impacts which the development may cause. Ecology surveys may be required during the planning process to ensure planning applications for development and construction are successful. The local planning authority will use the survey to consider how the development will impact the environment of the area.

An ecological site survey will access all areas of the development site and will highlight anything that could cause concern from an ecological standpoint. A survey will also identify any protected species and habitats that are present within proximity of the site. The ecology survey may highlight potential opportunities for introducing new habitat creation, such as badger setts or bat roosts.

Landscape ecological management plans can also be requested alongside these surveys for large scale developments.

Ecology Survey Cheshire: Types of Surveys

Preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA) – This is the first survey that is carried out by licensed ecology consultants. Otherwise known as a phase 1 habitat survey, it is an initial desktop study and a walkover survey. A PEA survey will identify the various habitats and species that are present within the site. It will also highlight any planning policy issues and potential impacts of the development on a particular species.

Ecological impact assessment – This is an essential document that describes the potential effects of any activities on the environment. This assessment takes the results that have been provided from the PEA and uses them to assess the impact by undertaking detailed habitat-specific surveys such as bat surveys.

Protected Species Survey: If there is any indication that a protected species could be present on a development site, a protected species survey will be required. Common types of protected species surveys include badgers, barn owls, water voles, nesting birds, bats and great crested newts,
