Protected Species Surveys

What is a Protected Species Survey?

In the UK, there are many different species which are protected by UK and European law. These species include badgers, great crested newts, bats, barn owls, water voles, and nesting birds. Undertaking Protected Species Surveys will provide information on the presence or absence of these types of species in and around a development site.

Collington Winter undertake all types of protected species, ecological surveys, including surveys for UK protected species and European Protected Species (EPS). We can further advise on what to do next if any protected species are found on or around a site.

We also provide Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, which may be more appropriate for larger sites.

When is a Protected Species Survey Required?

Before any development takes place, a protected species survey should be carried out to determine whether any protected species are present on or within the vicinity of the development site.

Ecology is a material consideration, and so when reviewing a planning application, planning authorities will require sites to have protected species surveys if applicable, and effective mitigation proposed to ensure that development will not have an adverse impact on the species.

Development should strive to provide a positive impact on species through enhancements where possible.

Following a survey, Collington Winter can advise on legal compliance regarding species protection legislation. We can also assist with protection and mitigation of species.
