Ecological Surveys Cornwall: Surveys and Assessments

What is an Ecological Survey?

Ecological surveys are undertaken on proposed development projects to establish any ecological issues the development may cause. Ecological surveys may be required during the planning process to ensure planning applications for development and construction are successful. The local planning authority will use the survey to consider how the development will impact the environment of the area.

Landscape ecological management plans can also be requested alongside these surveys for large scale developments.

Ecological Surveys Cornwall: Types of Survey

Preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA) – This is the first survey that is carried out by licensed ecology consultants. It is otherwise known as a phase 1 habitat survey. This is an initial desktop study and a walkover survey.

A PEA survey will identify the various habitats and species that are present within the site. It will also highlight any planning policy issues and potential impacts of the development on a particular species.

Ecological impact assessment (ECIA) – This is an essential document that describes the potential effects of any activities on the environment. This assessment takes the results that have been provided from the PEA and uses them to assess any impact. This can be done by undertaking detailed habitat specific surveys such as bat surveys.

Protected Species Survey: If there is any indication that a protected species could be present on a development site, a protected species survey will be required. There are many types of protected species surveys including badgers, great crested newts, bats, barn owls surveys, water voles, reptile surveys, dormouse surveys, otter surveys and nesting birds surveys.

The chartered institute of ecology and environmental management (CIEEM) can provide further information on these surveys.
