Preliminary Ecological Appraisal Cambridge: An Overview
What is a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal?
A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) should be the first step you take in evaluating a site. A PEA will provide an overview of a site, which can help to understand its ecological conditions. The two main components of an ecological appraisal include an extended Phase 1 habitat survey and an ecological desk study. A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal will often be requested during a planning application for planning permission.
When is a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal Required?
If a development site has the potential to impact an area, an ecological assessment of the site must be undertaken. Preliminary ecological appraisals must be carried out before the submission of a planning application. These appraisals are undertaken to preserve designated nature conservation sites, including sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) and local wildlife sites (LWS).
We advise that pre-discussions with the local planning authority are undertaken to determine whether an ecology survey is required.
Types of survey
Collington Winter are able to assist your project by undertaking ecological desk studies, as well as extended phase 1 habitat surveys.
- Ecological Desk Study: Collington Winter provide an ecological desk study service. We do this by obtaining records and data on designated sites from local record centres. We undertake research on legally protected sites and obtain records on protected or notable species or habitats within the area of the site. We are then able to provide printed or interactive maps using GIS using the data provided.
- Extended Phase-1 Habitat Survey: The phase 1 habitat survey follows a standard methodology and involves finding key evidence to identify any key ecological issues. This information is especially relevant when there is protected, or notable faunal species is found. This also applies when sightings, signs or evidence of protected species being present on a site is found. We can also provide guidance on how to best resolve the ecological issues identified using mitigation, compensation and enhancement measures.
We use the ecological desk study and an extended phase 1 habitat survey to create botanical species lists and to map habitats present on-site and within the surrounding area to ensure their preservation.
