We are seeking an ambitious bat ecologist to lead and expand the bat survey team. As a rapidly growing business working nationwide, CWE can provide unlimited opportunities for career growth.

The role will include the technical leadership relating to bat projects, including project costings, delivery and client consultation. The successful candidate will be able to obtain Natural England Bat Mitigation Licences and undertake the necessary supervision works. The role will also include technical training of the CWE ecology team, Bat Survey Report review and oversight of the bat survey season.

We are seeking an ambitious individual, looking for further experience undertaking Project Management, client liaison and business operations. They must be able to produce high quality ecological reports to inform planning permission and have good knowledge of UK legislation and Natural England requirements. The individual must have a proven track record of working and liaising with the Local Planning Authority and must have high levels of working knowledge of the planning system.

The role will suit an ecologist with over 3 years experience working within a consultancy environment, looking for a role with greater responsibility and opportunities to progress their career. The successful applicant must have held a Class 2 Natural England Bat Licence for at least 6 months and be able to apply for Natural England Bat Mitigation Licences under their own name.

At CWE, we work on a variety of projects, from householder applications, large scale residential developments, renewable energy, commercial schemes and minerals and waste applications.

Opportunities are available within this role to become involved in and undertake PEA’s as well as other protected species surveys (GCN, otter, water vole, reptile, bird etc). No pigeon holing at CWE…

Job Roles:

  • Undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Protected Species Surveys on a range of sites throughout the UK.
  • Undertake Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments and provide advice regarding the same for clients.
  • Work closely with colleagues in our Landscape Architecture and Arboricultural team to provide high quality advice on projects.
  • Produce high quality ecological reports for submission with planning applications.
  • Manage your own projects under the supervision of the Ecology Director. Client liaison, fee proposals and billing are all key parts of project management.

Job Requirements:

  • A degree or equivalent in an Environmental Science subject, or demonstration or relevant alternative experience.
  • Must have Natural England Bat Level 2 Licence and ability to write Bat EPSL’s
  • Proven and demonstrable experience undertaking PRAs and Protected Species Surveys, and ability to write these reports independently to a high standard.
  • Desirable membership with a relevant professional body such as CIEEM, IES, IEMA (will be paid for by CWE annually).
  • Experience working within an ecological consultancy.
  • Own car and ability to drive long distances for work.
  • Ability to stay away from home for short periods (1-2 nights) for work throughout the UK (hotel expenses all paid for).

Candidates with successful CV’s will be invited for interview. As part of the interview process, you will be asked to produce written work for assessment of skills. You may also be asked to attend a full or half trial day at the office (your time would be paid for) to further assess skills and fit within the team.

Salary starting at £40,000 per annum. Higher salaries can be negotiated based on experience of the individual.
